VAIO Phone A: Launched in Japan

VAIO has recently launched smartphone named VAIO Phone A in markets of Japan. It uses the same hardware platform as the company’s last year VAIO Phone Biz, but comes with more updated android system. VAIO is selling their Cortex-A53 based mid-range smartphone for even less than $250 which is remarkable low for a machined aluminium build smartphone. The former PC division of Sony, VAIO is now an independent PC vendor from Japan. They entered the Smartphone Business with their VAIO Phone Biz targeted for business users. VAIO Phone Biz was powered by Microsoft’s Windows 10 for Mobile. As for VAIO Phone A is powered by Android Marshmallow the most favourite OS of Google.
Apart from operating system of VAIO Phone Biz and the Microsoft Continuum the key reason for its selling was its Aluminium Unibody. VAIO is relaunching the Phone after one year but this time they are going with Google’s Andorid. Just like VAIO Phone Biz, the VAIO Phone A (VPA 0511 S) boasts Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC (8 ARM CortexA53 cores clocked at 1.50 GHz, Adreno 405 graphics core) and features a 5.5” FHD display. The handset comes equipped with 3 GB of LPDDR3 memory, 16 GB of NAND flash storage (and a microSD card slot for expansion), 13 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a micro USB 2.0 connector, various sensors, a 2800 mAh battery, and so on. Just like its Windows 10 based brother, the new unit also supports two SIM cards (a nano SIM and a micro SIM) and is compatible with 3G/LTE bands 1, 3, 6, 8, 11, 19 and 21 with carrier aggregation (so, not suitable for the U.S.). Finally, the weight and thickness of the product remained the same as before: 8.3 mm and 167 grams.
Even after the fact that Snapdragon 617 can support Android Version 7 The VAIO is going to ship its phone with Android Version 6.0.1. the company has not yet confirmed whether they will be launching the update to the system or not for their smartphone.

The smartphone is available for purchase on company’s website exclusively in japan, and the company is charging ¥26,784 (237 USD) for the smartphone. The price is uncommonly cheap for a smartphone featuring machined aluminium unibody. But taking the competition in the market, the low price is a way to drive sales.
