Making Your Android Device More Secure and Privacy Conscious.

With all this new technology there comes a question how much secure It really is? With seeing so much advertisements about security in devices we completely overlook the fact that these things only work when user uses them and some of them are so complicated that normal user generally don’t use them.
Being worried about the security of your device is normal because it may be containing sensitive data regarding your work or personal life. Even though the devices now days are very secured and safe for private data, there are still some things one can do to make it more secure for peace of mind.

  1. Find My Device (Formerly Known as Android Device Manager)

This is best app for you if you are worried about the safety of your device, this is also the most ignored app and most of the time people don’t even know about its usefulness. It is a service provided by google for every android device and its completely free and available on Playstore. What this app does is it sets up your device to work with the Google’s Find My Device page which you can access here.

Once you have installed the application you just have to simply login to access all the devices that are linked to your google account. On the Find My Device Page you will have three options to choose from (Figure Below).

If your device is an Android device most of the time Find my device comes preinstalled in the device and one need to just activate and they are good to go but some manufacturers replace them with their custom app.

  1. Screen Lock

Well we all know that locking the screen Is the most basic step in protecting any smartphone. I don’t think there is anybody out there who can provide with an excuse to keep your phone open for prying eyes. Setting up a screen lock is the first thing everyone does nowadays be it PIN, Password, Pattern or Fingerprint. Sometime screen lock does seem like a nuisance but it is still better than the fear of compromising your private/sensitive data. So if you’re one of those who do not like screen locks then you should consider setting it up if you want your private life to be secure. And let’s not forget these three things to never share your password to any one you do not trust, beware of shoulder sniffers and change your password as soon as you think that it is compromised.

  1. AppLocker

If your phone contains data that is too private to be shared with anyone and your phone is being used by someone other than you like your wife or your family, you can most certainly try an applock these utility apps certainly do come in handy in these situations. My choice for this is AppLock.
Android-App-Lock

Once you have installed it gives you the choice to lock individual apps according to your choice. The applock can use your current screen lock password or you can setup a new one for it so that your data is safe even after your screen lock password is compromised. The only way can open the that is locked by the app is by knowing the secret that you have setup. The only downside for now Is that you cannot use different passwords for different apps.

  1. Updating and App Choice

The other most important thing to keep in mind if you want the security of your device to be tight is that you should carefully choose what apps you are installing. Apps from certified developers and legible app providers is always a good choice. Keep the number of apps that you install from outside the PlayStore limited. They are not in PlayStore because of a reason and that reason can most probably harm your device. One more thing you all should keep in mind is that you should always keep your device/apps on your device up to date as google and other developers keep providing security patches whenever they find a vulnerability.

  1. Setting Up User Accounts

This new feature was introduced to all devices with lollipop update. You can create multiple user accounts into your android device and one user will not be able to access the data of other user. This is very important if you have kids at your home and they play with your phone as they might accidentally delete some important data or share it with some person unknown. This feature can simply be made use of by swiping the notification panel and clicking on the user icon (top left corner). There will be an option to Create/Add new user. Click OK on the warning/prompt. The new user will also have to provide google account if he/she wants to use the features provided by google like PlayStore. If for some reason you do not want to create an account with an associated google account, then you can always switch to inbuilt guest account. This account restrict user of all access except some basic application and to regain access to your account you will have to enter screen lock PIN/Password/patter/Fingerprint.

Rainbow tables are known to speed things up, by completing a part of the guessing job beforehand, but the output rainbow table that needs to be downloaded from the net is disastrously large (can be 100s of GBs sometimes). Affordable Galaxy Home Smart Speakers from Samsung Powered by Bixby

Image Credit: Samsung Recently Samsung introduced their Galaxy Home Smart Speakers powered by Bixby Assistant from Samsung and it is yet to hit the market, but rumours about them planning an affordable version of the speakers which will also be powered by their voice assistant Bixby. Although the full specification of the speaker is not yet known it is expected to have less features being the affordable one than the pricier one i.e. the Galaxy Home Smart Speakers. This could most likely be their strategy as the Galaxy Home Speaker may compete with the Apple HomePod which cost somewhere around 349 USD but for Samsung to compete with more affordable speakers available in the market like Google Home and Amazon Echo which are available at less than 200 USD or so they had to take this approach.
